Studio

Prior Architecture is a design focused practice delivering architectural services across Kent and the South East. Founded by Joseph Prior after more than a decade working within established UK architectural practices, the studio brings experience across private residential, developer led housing, retail and education, taking projects from early concept through to construction on site, with a clear focus on thoughtful design, buildability and long term value. The practice was established to allow a more considered and reflective way of working, where time is taken to understand people, place and purpose. Experience across a wide range of projects has shaped an adaptable approach, grounded in careful judgement and a clear understanding of the practical realities that influence how buildings are designed, approved and built. We approach architecture, interiors and landscape as a single, holistic design process. Each project begins with close attention to how spaces are used, how they feel to inhabit, and how they sit within their wider context. By balancing ambition with planning, budget and buildability, and by focusing on materials, proportion and light, we help clients navigate complexity with clarity and confidence, creating calm, enduring environments that quietly enrich everyday life.
"Our aim is to create calm, enduring environments that quietly enrich everyday life."
Services
Our services are shaped around the needs of each project, whether that involves early design advice, planning support or full project delivery. We work flexibly and collaboratively, adjusting scope and level of involvement to suit budget, programme and ambition, while maintaining a consistent focus on quality, clarity and buildability.
Concept design & feasibility

We help you explore what’s possible on your site, considering layout options, planning constraints, budget and buildability. This early work allows ideas to be tested and refined before committing to a particular direction.
Technical design

Once planning is in place, we develop the design into detailed drawings suitable for Building Regulations approval and construction. This stage ensures the project is well thought through, coordinated and ready to build.
Landscape design

We design gardens and outdoor spaces as an extension of the architecture, considering levels, materials and planting together. The aim is to create outdoor areas that feel well connected to the house and work naturally over time.
Planning applications

We prepare clear, well-considered planning drawings and guide your project through the application process. Our focus is on responding sensitively to the site and context, while giving your proposal the best chance of approval.
During construction

We can remain involved during construction to help answer questions, review progress and resolve details as they arise. This support helps keep the project aligned with the design intent as work on site progresses.
Interior design

We can help shape the interior layout, joinery and material choices so everything works together. This ensures the spaces feel coherent, practical and comfortable to live in.
